The magic Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan is known for its mystical aura resulting from a combination of an exotic nature and a traditional culture. The lake basin has volcanic in origin, the enormous caldera was formed by an eruption 84,000 years ago.
At an altitude of at 1,562 m above sea level and surrounded by 3 volcanoes, Lake Atitlan it is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The local villages still preserve a look and feel of the Mayan culture, manufacturing and using traditional garments and handicrafts. Old Mayan languages are spoken by many inhabitants.
The ancient Mayans lived in what is now known as southern Mexico and northern Central America including Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Yucatán Peninsula and El Salvador. Their descendants still live there today in these villages around Lake Atitlan.
